The following information is an update of some of the past year’s accomplishments of the HPC Environmental Committee, submitted by Pat Miller:
The Environmental Committee completed 10 nature walks and a Christmas Bird Count in 2011. We were also successful in selling out our popular calendars for 2012, and the remainder of our field caps. Thanks everyone who bought one! Committee member, Les Leighton, took our display around to at least one event in 2011, the Stoney Creek Great Salmon Send-off, and likely more.
Pat Miller recently contributed some information about the Sanctuary and Hastings Park to Nature Vancouver’s new publication: Nature Vancouver: A Portrait 1994-2010. Visit the link to find out more about requesting a copy.
At the recent Nature Vancouver AGM on April 26th, Virginia Downes and Pat Miller received the 2012 Davidson Award for Conservation, in recognition of their work together for Hastings Park (watch for 2012 Award updates on their site). Nature Vancouver is very supportive of the HPC and the Sanctuary. Most recently they have expressed strong support for the return of Park Board governance, and maintenance of the Sanctuary’s “semi-wild” naturescape, which provides important habitat for resident and migratory birds and other wildlife, and a green refuge for its human visitors.
Nature Vancouver recently nominated the Sanctuary as one of the 5 walk events to be held in the City of Vancouver on May 12th – International Migratory Birds Day.
We would additionally like to recognize committee member Doug Cooper’s contribution – he is in the Sanctuary at least 2 or 3 times a week and has been working with Pat Miller to compile an impressive record of seasonal bird sightings, likely one of the best in the City. We are currently at 130 species.
